At the outset of Wimbledon 2004, The Championships appeared to be one of the most open and unpredictable for many years. In the Gentlemen's Singles event, defending champion, Roger Federer, and 2002 winner, Lleyton Hewitt, would have been hoping to add a second title to their collections. The only other former champion in the field, Goran Ivanisevic, was making his first appearance back in SW19 since his triumph in 2001. Could the Croatian perform miracles yet again, and make his farewell to Wimbledon a triumphant one? Or would Tim Henman, at the age of 29, finally cheer the hearts of his devoted home fans by becoming the first British men's champion since Fred Perry in 1936?
In the Ladies' Singles, the enforced absence of the Belgians, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, looked to give the Williams' sisters a clear tilt at a fifth consecutive title for the family. But neither Serena nor Venus were coming into The Championships in their most dominant form; could the Russian ladies carry forward their good form from the clay of Roland Garros? Or would the American veterans, Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati, be able to fend off the threat from the East?
Whilst the weather may have done its best to dampen the excitement, as ever the tennis shone through to produce two weeks of competition that will live long in the memory, and two players worthy of the title of champion: Roger Federer retained his title with a near flawless display, while Maria Sharapova played with a poise and power that belied her tender years to become the third youngest Ladies' champion of all time.
